The Legacy of West Covina Nurseries: Growing through Generations

Founded by Dick and Ann Zylstra on three acres in West Covina in 1968, West Covina Nurseries has since grown into a thriving, multi-generational family business. With each generation, the nursery has expanded its reach and offerings to meet the evolving needs of the landscaping industry.

In 1971, we added an 18-acre growing yard in San Gabriel, followed by another 15 acres in La Verne in 1990. In 1981, Dick and Ann relocated to Santa Barbara, where new growth opportunities were realized. This location now managed by Dick and Ann’s youngest son, Doug, serves as a 20-acre hub, transferring plants across California. In 1984, a 3-acre propagation yard was purchased and run by daughter, Diane Mead. In 2006, an additional 31 acres were added in Riverside.

Our third generation entered the business in 2007 with Dave’s son, Ryan, who became a partner in 2020. Ryan works alongside our sales team, including Glenn Finkbiner, Aaron Potter, and Joyce Tyler, to keep sales running smoothly. Corrine Swan joined in 2012, working alongside Diane in Arroyo Grande, where she oversees yard management and sales.

To serve Northern California’s growing demand, we expanded to Brentwood in 2021, adding 10 acres. Later that year, our Arroyo Grande operations relocated to a new 15-acre site dedicated to plant propagation and specialty crops.

Today, with over 100 acres across multiple climates, we’re able to offer an extensive variety of plant materials. Our commitment to quality and continuous improvement drives us to seek out unique plants and new varieties for our clients’ diverse needs.
